With Emirates the crew makes the biggest difference. Meal wasn’t amazing but the drinks make up for it all. It was a late flight so food wasn’t that important. The bar at the back of the A380 makes flying fun again

The pretty town of Amalfi is situated at the heart of theAmalfi Coast, one of the country’s most glamorous and beautiful regions. The coastline stretches south on the western side of Italyfrom the Bay of Naples. Its small towns perched on the hills and cliffs that lead down to an emerald sea have long been visited by travellers looking for some rest and relaxation amid sophisticated and glitzy surroundings.

Naples is the northernmost point of the region and the city where all flights to the Amalfi Coast arrive. From here, wend your way south along a staggering and precarious-looking hillside road with spectacular views far out across the sea. Perhaps the most idyllic town, Positano has two beaches, many high-end restaurants serving excellent local food and picturesque streets winding steeply up the hill. Further south, the smaller Praiano is often visited for its cliff-side caves. Amalfi itself is much larger and it is easier to find cheap accommodation and food, as well as more activities beyond shopping and sunbathing. Ravello is famous for its music; the annual Wagner festival is held here.

Travel along the coast is easy, either by bus or taxi on the breathtaking coastal road or by ferry between resorts, so there is no need to decide in advance which town you most want to visit when you are booking an Amalfi Coast flight. An unmissable trip is to the island of Capri by ferry. Once home to the Emperor Tiberius, today the town houses winding streets of designer shops, visited every year by a host of celebrities.

What is good to know if travelling to Amalfi?

  • Accommodation in the town of Amalfi is not as pricey as elsewhere along the coast because the town is large. It is a great place to use as the base for seeing the rest of this amazing coastline. Get around on the SITA buses.
  • See the oldest working paper mill in Europe in the Museo della Carta and look round the paper museum.
  • Amalfi used to be a great sea power. In the Museo Civico you can see the Tavole Amalfitane whose written word was maritime law in the Mediterranean until 1570.
  • There are two beaches in Positano. The main one, Spiaggia Grande, is right in the heart of the town, and both of the main roads, and all the sidesteps, eventually lead here. If it’s too crowded, head for Spiaggia del Fornillo, which you can reach in five minutes from the main beach, walking past the Covo dei Saraceni hotel. The walk offers excellent views out to sea and the beach itself, once you reach it, is more tranquil, with white sand and a few good beachfront bars and restaurants, framed by some beautiful bougainvillea.
  • Don’t miss the Villa Rufolo in Ravello. The villa is supposed to be the place that inspired Wagner for his opera Parsifal.
  • When is the best time to fly to Amalfi?

Peak Season: The high season on the Amalfi Coast isJuly to September. Flights to the Amalfi Coast will be crowded and hotels may be fully booked. Make sure you book your accommodation ahead of time if arriving in the peak season and prepare yourself for other tourists, particularly in the most popular spots such as Positano, Capri and Sorrento. Off Season: The off season is November to March when the weather can be chilly and damp, but there are less tourist crowds. It is easierto find a cheap flight to the Amalfi Coastduring the off-season, but pack appropriately for colder weather. Shoulder Season: April to June and October may be the best times to visit. The weather is pleasant and there are fewer crowds. If you’re planning a Naples vacation in May, keep in mind that the Maggio dei Monumenti has exhibits, fairs, and special events so Naples flights and accommodations might be pricey. Spring and fall provide the best views from Vesuvius, but the days are shorter than in summer.
