British citizens are able to enter South Korean without a visa for up to 90 days, providing they are visiting for tourism purposes only. You must be able to provide an onwards ticket upon arrival. Before you travel, you should apply for a K-ETA, which is a pre-authorisation to enter the country. This can be applied for online via the official website. If you plan to stay longer than 90 days, or should you want to work in the country, you will need to apply for a visa before you travel at the South Korean Embassy.

If you want to fly direct to Seoul from the United Kingdom, you will depart from Heathrow Airport (LHR). You can take a direct flight with Asiana Airlines, Korean Air, and Virgin Atlantic. The duration of these flights is around 12h 20min on average. It might be more convenient for you to fly indirect though. From Stansted Airport (STN), you can fly with Emirates, which transfers at Dubai Airport (DXB). From Manchester Airport (MAN) you could fly with Lufthansa, with a change at Frankfurt Airport (FRA). Alternatively, from Edinburgh Airport (EDI), you can fly with KLM, which requires one transfer at Amsterdam Airport (AMS).

For those that are planning to hire a car in Seoul, you will find there are numerous car hire agencies at Incheon International Airport (ICN). Many of the car hire desks, such as Avis, are located in the airport's Arrivals Hall. At the car hire office, you will need to show a valid driver’s licence and passport. In addition, you’ll need to have a credit card in the main driver’s name. It’s worth noting that some agencies will require an International Driving Permit (IDP), which you will need to obtain ahead of your trip from the UK.

  • What should I pack for a flight to Seoul?

Your suitcase will look very different depending on the time of year that you’re visiting Seoul. In spring, it’s a good idea to pack lightweight and breathable clothes, such as cotton shirts, trousers and skirts for the day, and a warmer outer layer in the evenings. Summers are hot and humid, so breathable clothing and a waterproof jacket for showers are recommended. During autumn, the weather can vary, so be prepared for mild days and cooler evenings, whereas in winter, the temperature drops and snow arrives, and it’s recommended to pack waterproof shoes and a warm coat.

  • What are some things to do in Seoul?

Seoul is a city that has something for everyone. One of the most popular things that you can do to learn about the history of the country is to go to the National Museum of Korea. Next up, take a trip to Gyeongbokgung Palace, which was the first royal palace built in the Joseon Dynasty. For those looking to get close to nature, a trip to Bukhansan National Park is a must. A popular location for hikers, and one of the easiest walks you can do is the course up to Baegundae Peak. If you’re travelling with kids, then a great day out is to Coex Aquarium, where your children can get up close and personal to some of their favourite marine species.

  • Can I take public transit from Incheon International Airport (ICN) to Seoul?

There are several ways you can travel the 63km (39 miles) from Incheon Airport to Seoul. One of the most popular ways to complete the journey is to take The Airport Railroad Express (AREX). There is an Express Train, which takes about 40 minutes, or the All Stop Train, which takes around an hour. This tends to be the cheapest option for travellers. Alternatively, the City Limousine Bus departs from outside the airport terminal and takes approximately 1h 10min. This is also a very affordable option for travellers.

  • What does ICN mean?

This is defined as Incheon Intl Airport (ICN). Codes like ICN are often used to just call airports uniquely. This flight destination has multiple associated airports, so we think it might be helpful to learn the name and codes of them as well. They are Seoul Gimpo Intl Airport (GMP).
