As a tropical destination, the Saint Croix island experiences distinct rainy and dry seasons. Generally, the best time to visit is between April and July, when there is very little rain and temperatures are pleasant. A visit in August and September will see high temperatures, but also brings a slight risk of hurricanes, although you may be able to secure cheap flights and budget accommodation.
Relax on pristine beaches, snorkel on unspoilt coral reefs and meet charismatic local wildlife in one of the Caribbean’s least crowded, but most charming destinations.
Christiansted is located on Saint Croix, one of the US Virgin Islands – but it has a far longer history than the US. Founded way back in the 16th century, for hundreds of years the town was ruled by Denmark. This means that there are many beautiful old Danish buildings, lending the town an atmosphere and feel that is totally unique in the West Indies.
As with many Caribbean destinations, the greatest attraction of Christiansted is the gorgeous sea itself. The resort is surrounded by vibrant coral reefs such as Buck Island. Take a boat across to the island and strap on your snorkel, or just wander through the tropical scenery, finding the ideal picnic spot.
Nature fans will adore Saint Croix. Aside from reefs, the island is a famous nesting site for sea turtles, and a well-timed trip can include seeing the turtle’s spectacular nesting sites.
The island also has some excellent on-shore amenities, including a championship-level golf course, the opportunity to take horseback rides through the interior or eco-tours to see the island’s wildlife.
Flights to Christiansted are also a great idea for food and drink lovers. Sip a rum and coconut cocktail beside the beach, or chow down on some of the freshest seafood you will ever find.
The island of Saint Croix is also a fantastic place to unwind in solitude with the ones you love. Less developed than other Caribbean destinations, visitors to Christiansted will be able to find all of the beach space they need at wonderful locations like Isaac Bay.
Getting around Christiansted and Saint Croix is easily done by rental car – and this option will provide maximum flexibility to visitors when heading to secluded coves. However, you could consider renting a charter boat for fishing and dive tours, or even rent kayaks and paddle from bay to bay. Within town, there are always plenty of taxis to go around.
The easiest way to get from Henry E. Rohlsen International Airport (STX) to the city centre is by a private rental car. Many hotels are tucked away on the coast as well, making a car a useful transport option. Most large hotels will offer handy shuttle buses, while you can also pre-book taxis before taking cheap flights to Christiansted, to make the transition as easy as possible.
