For some, Fiji is all about luxury resorts and thrilling (and, at times, pricey) adventures. But with so much natural beauty on offer, its 333 islands can more than cater for any budget. As the motto goes, Fiji is the place ‘where happiness finds you’, and what could make a person happier than seeing these wonderful islands while saving some dollar? Whether you want nothing more than to chill by the sea with a cocktail in hand, soak up the culture or seek out some adrenaline-inducing activities, you’ll certainly be able to find plenty of budget-friendly experiences, without compromising on epic holiday memories.

Flights to Fiji

1. Snorkelling

Land in Fiji. Get off plane. Put on your swimsuit and snorkel. Jump in the sea. Fiji wows below the waves. The soft coral capital of the world is home to around 1,000 species of fish and hundreds of corals. And did we mention turtles? Fiji’s clear warm waters are just begging to be explored (and offer ample opportunities for GoPro underwater selfies). There are several prime spots along Viti Levu’s Coral Coast or head to the Somoso Strait, where you’ll find the seriously rainbow-y reefs. Kadavu island’s coast is your best bet for animal spotting too. Just bear in mind that many of the more popular snorkelling spots can’t be used during high tide, and certain areas are prone to having strong currents.

 2. Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple, Nadi

As well as its exceptionally colourful façade, Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple is an unmissable attraction due to being one of the few examples of Dravidian architecture outside of India that sits startlingly in front of Nadi’s mountainous backdrop. Its exterior, an elaborate mix of intricate patterns and flamboyant deities, is carved from wood and painted an array of bright colours. Once you’ve explored this revered temple, you can chomp down on some cheap eats in the onsite vegetarian restaurant.

3. Kava drinking ceremony

Known traditionally in Fiji as yaqona, kava is a popular, naturally-sourced drink found throughout the South Pacific islands. Renowned for its calming, sleepy-like qualities, kava is the drop for you if you’re having trouble getting onto ‘Fiji Time’. Sampling this delicacy comes with a ceremony involving clapping, nodding and drinking muddy-like water – so best to drink quickly (no sipping!) and without breathing through your nose. The ceremony should be followed, in our opinion, by laying in the nearest available hammock. These ceremonies are performed across the island, so check with your accommodation provider for where you will most likely be able to take part in one.

4. Garden of the Sleeping Giant

Surrounded by Nausori Highland scenery, this botanical wonderland was once the home of late actor Raymond Burr. The gardens are home to some 2,000 species of orchid and flora that can be enjoyed while wandering along the gardens’ sheltered pathways and scenic ponds. You can choose to take a tour with a guide (it’s included in the entry fee) or simply meander along and enjoy the peace and quiet.

5. Nadi Markets

Head into central Nadi, and explore its various market stalls where locals and tourists alike flock to pick up groceries and trinkets. Hospital Road’s food market is a real feast for the senses with vendors toting stalls stacked with fruit, veg and other produce, as well as flowers and kava. If you need any more encouragement, we have two words for you: free samples.

6. Tavoro Falls, Bouma National Heritage Park

Nestled in Bouma National Heritage Park’s jungle, in Fiji’s third largest island, Taveuni, you can frolic under Fiji’s most famous waterfall. Choose to hike your butt off to get to the very top or just hang out at the base of the first of three waterfalls and swim in the volcanic pool that collects the cascading waters from above.

7. Fiji Museum

Explore 3,700 years of history and Fijian culture. As well as celebrating Fiji’s heritage, the exhibits are not afraid to delve into the unsavoury topics of war and cannibalism. If that’s not really your thing, then a walk through the nearby Thurston Gardens will allow for some more attractive viewing.

8. Kula Eco Park

Set among spectacular scenery, Kula Eco Park is a sanctuary for an array of creatures, including many that are critically endangered. The park’s work, including its successful efforts in breeding the Fijian Crested Iguana, have earned it its reputation as a top environmental attraction – as well as a spat of awards. You’ll be able to get up close and personal with a variety of its local residents, among spectacular scenery.

9. Waitavala Water Slide

Built by nature, this waterslide winds through epic rainforest scenery and ends in a small pool that you can splash about in. This is one of those ‘no pain-no gain’ situations; you may find yourself a little bashed and bruised by the end. But hey, it sure is worth it for the thrill.

10. Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park

Fiji’s first national park, as the name probably suggests, is famed for its impressive sand dunes that can be explored via a one or two-hour self guided tour. As well as captivating scenery, the park is an important archaeological landmark. Home to one of the largest burial sites in the Pacific, ceramics and pottery have been uncovered after being under the sands for over 2,000 years.
