Host of the Winter Olympics on two occasions and the location of the famous Cresta Run for tobogganing, St Moritz is also a traditional spa town dating from the Middle Ages. The architecture itself may be a bit ugly, but look to the mountains, sip from a hot chocolate and people-watch, rather than looking back to the resort.

The snow record here is good, but equally importantly, the sun shines year-round, which makes for a more relaxing winter holiday. Experienced skiers may need to travel a bit further to find some challenging runs. St Moritz can cater more for beginners and intermediates – or those who want to pose in their ski gear, rather than utilising it.
