Late August/early September is a great time to visit the bustling city and enjoy the traditional Allentown Fair with its carnival atmosphere. The county fair is a unique experience and also attracts a great selection of well-known music acts. Other events include marching band festivals, fairgrounds, antique sales and large scale flea markets. There is something for everyone in this friendly city including family activities such as the exciting Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom with over a 100 fantastic rides and the interactive Da Vinci Science Centre. Both are open all year round and there are opportunities for discounted tickets during the off-peak season, December to February. Flights to Allentown may also be cheaper during the off-peak season, and deals on accommodation at the large selection of hotels, inns and budget motels located around the city might be available. The area has become a year-round destination with its hot summers (June-August), mild springs and autumns and snowy winters. The leafy city of Allentown lies in the heart of Lehigh Valley in Pennsylvania which is bounded by the mighty mountains of the Appalachian range. The beautiful Lehigh River flows through Allentown, as well as the picturesque canal system that was built during the 19th century Industrial Revolution. The city is famous for its wealth of parks and green spaces: Cedar Creek Parkway and Bicentennial Park are well worth a visit. Allentown’s long history, dating back to 1762, has left it with an interesting architectural heritage. There are Victorian houses, stately homes, century old industrial buildings and Federal rowhomes. It also has a place in the history books for successfully concealing the Liberty Bell during the American Revolutionary War from the British Army. Today the Liberty Bell Museum marks the spot where the famous bell was hidden. There is vibrant cultural scene in Allentown with an extensive Art Museum, Heritage Museum and the America On Wheels Museum amongst others. Live venues are aplenty with the city orchestra performing at the Symphony Hall, the Nineteenth Street Theatre offering a varied programme of productions and the PPL Centre seating 10,000. The centre hosts shows by world class music artists and sporting events such as the American Ice Hockey League.
